Gardaí found heroin hidden in baby's nappy
The drugs were in a Kinder egg capsule placed inside the child's nappy.
A Waterford man hid nearly 8 grams of heroin inside his baby's nappy to avoid being detected by Gardaí.
Thomas O'Reilly (32) of 105 St. Herblain Park pleaded guilty to possession contrary to Section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
On January 22, 2024, Gardaí pulled over O'Reilly as he was driving in Luffany, Ferrybank. He was travelling with his partner and two small children in the backseat.
The family were conveyed to Waterford Garda Station where the parents consented to let the children be searched. It was there that Gardaí discovered a Kinder egg hidden in the seven-month-old baby's nappy. Inside, the egg contained 7.7 grams of heroin, valued at €1,078.
O'Reilly told Gardaí that he had "picked it up in New Ross for a fella".
At Waterford Circuit Court, O'Reilly appeared before Judge Eugene O'Kelly. The Court heard that he had 13 previous convictions, mostly for road traffic offences.
According to defence counsel Brian P O'Shea, he 'panicked and put the package into the nappy', when he was stopped by Gardaí. The Court heard that O'Reilly was a father of five and was setting up a power-hosing business.
Judge O'Kelly expressed concern over the "shockingly young age" of the infant used to conceal the drugs.
O'Reilly was sentenced to two years imprisonment with the final nine months suspended in mitigation of his early plea and lack of similar convictions.
