Anti-social behavior in Waterford: 'That is, unfortunately, the society we live in'

Cllr Tom Cronin said of Gallowshill: "It’s a bit much and someone is going to get hurt up there"

The Dungarvan District Manager, Ivan Grimes, has said anti-social behaviour is very hard to police.

Responding to Councillor Tom Cronin at the March sitting of the Dungarvan-Lismore District Council, who raised the issue of anti-social behaviour, dumping and the use of scrambler bikes at Gallowshill.

Mr Grimes said that while they can raise it again with gardaí and the Local Community Safety Partnership, he does not think it will do much good.

“My only concern and this is a personal observation, but I’ve seen it across the city and county.

“You can take measures against antisocial behaviour, but you just move it somewhere else. That is, unfortunately, the society we live in.

“There are people who engage in antisocial, anti-community behaviour.

“The use of scramblers. We all know after recent events, the use is illegal. People should not be using them, but they are very difficult for gardaí to police,” said Mr Grimes.

Cllr Cronin was the latest councillor to raise the plight of residents at Gallowshill.

He said that the issue is that gardaí refer people to the council and the council refers back to the gardaí.

“We need to get action rather than pushing it from one crowd to the other, going from the guards to the council. It’s a bit much and someone is going to get hurt up there. There is going to be a fight, or someone is going to get burned; there are fires and everything being lit there.

Its just not good enough anymore,” said Cllr Cronin.

Mr Grimes said that they would raise it at the LCSP, but that the location is one that is hard to police due to multiple access points.
