Plunkett Station in Waterford

The flood defence capacity of Plunkett Station was raised at the December meeting of the Metropolitan council.

Cllr Eamon Quinlan (Fianna Fáil) stated: "Every time I use that train station, on the track that goes nowhere, the track that goes into the side of the building, the one that has the train, and the other one that used to go down into the North Quays, is consistently flooded."

He asked: "Is there planning in the works on our part or here or there to fix that track because otherwise I don't see how trains can operate further into the North Quays as the track is often submerged."

Director of Services Michael Quinn said: "The last significant piece of work we have to do is actually flood defences for the railway track for the North Quays.

"That's building flood defences all the way from a mile up river, down past Plunkett Station, through the North Quays site up to its far end. All those flood defences and pump stations need to be put in place before the railway track can be opened again, but that will address the issues of water and flooding taking place [...] all the infrastructure to go into the new station."
