Disability centre found non-compliant in three areas
Nova Residential Services was found non-compliant in the notification of incidents, fire precautions and medicines and pharmaceutical services.
An inspection of Nova Residential Services in Waterford City by the Health Information and Quality Services (HIQA) found the disability centre non-compliant in three areas.
Nova Residential Services was found non-compliant in the notification of incidents, fire precautions and medicines and pharmaceutical services.
The inspection was carried out on July 29. The Brothers of Charity Services run the disability centre.
The centre houses six adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.
A review of documentation showed two incidents, one involving a fire in the property and another of safeguarding concern, had not been reported to the Chief Inspector of Social Services as required.
A previous inspection in January highlighted several fire doors in the property were fitted with non-fire-rated door handles and fittings. July’s inspection yielded no evidence that progress had been made towards creating a safer environment for residents.
Two residents in the centre lacked a safe and secure location to store their self-administered medication.
Another resident had no PRN protocol on file. PRN refers to medication that is taken "when required", e.g. coughing and vomiting medication.
Barring non-compliance in HIQA standards, the report said all residents were content with their living conditions and the staff in the centre.
“One resident showed the inspectors around their home on the morning of the inspection. The resident appeared happy with their apartment and proud of their space,” the report said.
The centre is made up of five apartment-style residences, with two residents sharing a space.
Residents are supported by staff at a semi-independent level, with one member on duty during the day and one on a sleepover shift at night.
