A Waterford man has pleaded guilty to 17 counts of deception, causing losses of approximately €10,000 to his victim.

Robert Evoy, of 25 Military Barracks, Waterford City, was arraigned before Judge Eugene O’Kelly at Waterford Courthouse recently.

Between September 2022 and November 2024, the victim was induced by deception to make 17 individual payments in respect of false VAT returns submitted by Evoy on his Revenue account.

All charges are contrary to Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act of 2001.

Evoy’s defence counsel made an application for a probation and welfare report to be prepared prior to his upcoming sentencing hearing.

The defence added that Evoy has suffered from significant alcohol and gambling problems.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly permitted the preparation of the report.

The court remanded Evoy on bail until April 15, when the case will be revisited.
