A new documentary series has aired on RTÉ featuring the Waterford Senior Camogie team.
Entitled ‘Inside the Championship’, the two-part series inside access to the 2025 Camogie season.
Director Ross Whitaker said the documentary’s goal was to shine a light on a sport starved of media representation.
That lack of interaction with the media initially proved a shock for Waterford’s Alannah McNulty as the cameras became an ever-present in the team's campaign to capture their first ever All-Ireland championship.
Speaking on Virgin Media’s Six O’Clock show, she said: “It was quite strange in the beginning…everyone was trying to escape from the camera. As time went on, it was lucky enough that everyone was approachable working with cameras.”
“As well as the championship, there were better and bigger things to be focusing on, so the cameras kind of took a back seat.”
Bigger things in this instance refer to ‘Skortgate’. During the filming of the documentary, players across the nation took a stand against the Camogie Association’s regulation requiring competing players to wear skorts.
It began in May, when Dublin and Kilkenny players wore shorts during the Leinster semi-final. Referee Ray Kelly told players that they must change into shorts or the game would be abandoned.
A week later, Munster Camogie deferred the senior hurling final between Waterford and Cork after both teams stated their intention to play in shorts.
On 22 May the Camogie Association voted overwhelmingly to allow players to choose between shorts or skorts.
McNulty had been playing for Waterford since she began with the development teams since aged 13. She said representing the Déise is “a great honour and privilege.”
“It’s lovely to represent all the people who have put time and effort into you.”
‘Inside the Championship’ aired on RTÉ on November 6.
Part two of the documentary is scheduled for November 13 at 10.15pm.
