Council confirm plans for Munster Bar

Since closing its doors in 2024, the iconic Munster Bar building has remained idle.

The pub operated since the 1950s and was one of Waterford cities most popular social hotspots.

After its closure, Waterford Council acquired the premises.

The building adjoins the Council’s headquarters, and it is understood that several doors on the upper floors are connected to City Hall.

In May, a spokesperson from Waterford Council confirmed that the acquisition of the Munster Bar was based on a strategic decision, and that the local authority were exploring a number of options for its future use.

Providing updates, Council Chief Executive Sean McKeown confirmed that the building will be amalgamated into the neighbouring Council headquarters and that it will be used for Council operations.

“Our intention over the next three years is to start renovating that building so that we can give up a lot of property that we are currently leasing around the city to centralise our staff and services here in City Hall” Mr. McKeown said.

He added that a design will need to be completed, which will be complicated by archaeological issues and protected city walls that run through the building.

“There are all sorts of issues there…but we have the asset and we will make use of it” he said.
