Construction of new Aldi store in Waterford city faces further delays
Recently, planning permission was granted for the construction of a new Aldi near the Carrickphierish Road in Waterford city.
The development consists of the construction of a single storey Aldi store with an 85-space car park.
Planning application for the site was initially submitted in May 2025, with further information requested by Waterford City and County Council on July 22.
Planning permission was granted by the Council on February 26, subject to 16 conditions.

However, Aldi Stores (Ireland) Limited are appealing three of these conditions.
In Condition 5(b), Waterford Council set out that the proposed totem sign at the entrance to the site be omitted from the development.
Aldi say however that the totem sign is entirely normal and consistent with signs at existing Aldi stores. Aldi say that such signage is accepted by planning authorities nationwide, including at existing Aldi stores in Waterford.
Condition 9, as set out by the Council, asks that the developer arrange measures to prevent dust nuisances in the area and comply with noise control standards during construction.
Aldi say however that clarity is needed over this point, and specific permissible noise limits will need to be provided.
In Condition 12(d), the Council similarly ask that noise from the operation of the development does not exceed certain levels.
Aldi also seek a rewording of this segment. They say it is unclear whether this condition relates to the noise levels during the construction of the development or during the long-term operation of the store.
The case is due to be decided by An Coimisiún Pleanála July 22.
