Aldi gets green light for sixth branch in Waterford
Concept art for the proposed development
Waterford City and County Council have granted planning permission to Aldi for the development of a new discount retail store on the Carrickpherish Road, Gracedieu.
The development would provide for the creation of 85 car parking spaces, 18 bike parking spaces, and is intended to cover .905 hectares.
The store would cover 1,367 square metres of net retail floor area, with an off-license and internal deposit return scheme (DRS) unit.
Aldi will also contribute €39,000 to Waterford City and County Council.
Planning application for the site was initially submitted in May 2025, with further information requested by the Council on July 22.
The proposed development attracted submissions from Mount Suir Residential Management Company and principal of Waterford Educate Together National School, Patrick Pender.
Mr Pender wrote to strongly oppose a potential site entrance being located on the small road off Carrickpherish Road, where the primary school is currently based.
Mr Pender wrote, “locating an entrance outside of the school would run counter to the objectives of safe, sustainable travel infrastructure and would introduce unnecessary high-risk to a high-pedestrian zone.”
The proposed site currently lies idle. A traffic assessment report filed on behalf of the developer said the junction arrangements in the vicinity of the site would allow traffic to operate smoothly and not become compromised by the Aldi development.
The land Aldi is building on is currently owned by housing developer Kingscroft Development Ltd.
The developers previously sought planning permission for a mixed-used residential development but were refused permission. Lidl were also denied planning permission to build on the site.
Aldi’s development will continue under the conditions laid out by the council, including a facility used for the deposit of glass and metal packaging.
The proposed site will add to Aldi’s five existing stores in City Square, Ardkeen, Kingsmeadow, Tramore and Dungarvan.
