A third of Choice-Based Letting offers in Waterford are refused

"We would think that if people are choosing those locations, they should be accepting them,” said Director of Services for Housing, Community and Emergency Services, Helena Dennehy.
Around 33% of Choice Based Letting offers are refused.
That is according to Director of Services for Housing, Community and Emergency Services, Helena Dennehy, at this month’s plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council in Dungarvan.
“And again, where they have indicated interest in a property and would like to take that property, there is still a refusal to that.
"We have reduced it down from around 50% to 33%, but again, we would think that if people are choosing those locations, they should be accepting them,” said Ms Dennehy.
Ms Dennehy said she would look into it further.
The director was responding to Councillor Donal Barry, who raised concerns over the 501 properties refused in 2024.
“This is an extremely high rate of refusals when you consider that we are in an unprecedented housing crisis in a country with sky-high rents," said Cllr Barry, who asked the housing executive to review what’s happening on Choice Based Letting in regard to house refusals.
Choice-based letting is a council system that allows people on the housing list to choose properties from a list of available homes.
The prospective tenant registers their interest, and the council decides who needs the property the most based on a set of criteria.
According to this month’s council management report, 1,432 properties have been advertised on the CBL system to-date.
