Your Fitness: What do I say to anyone who is struggling to fit health and fitness into their life?
Life can sometimes have phases where we don’t see as many “perfect” weeks as we would like, but all is not lost.
As health professionals we are privileged to work with a wide variety of individuals. As a result you come to learn that people often have busy lives where they might initially struggle to fit their health and exercise behaviours in as a result.
In many cases this can be time sensitive - there are times during our life where our priorities may shift with other priorities taking centre stage i.e. having children, maybe an ill family member or an exceptionally busy period in work!
To a lot of us working in the health and fitness industry - this can be a shock initially. As professionals who live and breathe health and fitness on a daily basis, it is sometimes hard to fathom how somebody doesn't have the same hierarchy of priorities as us.
To me, this actually makes perfect sense. As health professionals we often enter the industry as we have a passion for it. People in different careers with different contexts will, of course, have a slightly different perspective in many cases. The more important point here is that this doesn’t matter - what’s important is how we approach this situation and how we meet these individuals where they are at.
In the majority of cases, for most people, I will offer this advice… Something is better than nothing. Yes. That’s it.
Only managed to get half your gym session done due to time commitments? That’s so much better than doing nothing. I would 100% prefer if someone was to attempt a session 2-3 times a week and only get 20-30 minute sessions each time than to not try at all.
This accumulates to around 90 minutes of resistance training across the week.
In the same way, if there is a period where you struggled to get training in at all but made sure you kept your steps up across the week and managed to keep your nutrition in a good place, making smart choices if and when eating out, you are making conscious decisions that favour your health and fitness. These might be in small ways but they still accumulate overall to a happier and healthier you.
Life can sometimes have phases where we don’t see as many “perfect” weeks as we would like - the important part is to continue showing up in small ways each day. All is not lost!
