A Waterford-based garda went above and beyond the call of duty recently to mark the retirement of a senior ranking colleague in the force.

In an online post Waterford Gardaí noted that Garda Mark Gavin, based in Portlaw Garda Station, 'loves a challenging run'.

With that in mind they notes he was 'more than happy' to mark the retirement of his friend and colleague, Inspector Brendan Grady, of Mill Street Garda Station with a 42km fundraising run in aid of the Little Blue Hero's and Galway RNLI.

The two were joined by Darren Gee on the marathon.

The Waterford gardaí also acknowledged that in the Déise county retirements are more often marked by a coffee morning or a night out!

They also wondered if Garda Gavin was giving a hint that training should begin for his eventual retirement - albeit not for a few years yet.
