Your Fitness: Setting realistic progress goals and sticking with the process

What can we do in a few weeks? We can start the process. We can start to make change.
This is something I find myself discussing with clients from time to time. Goal setting is great. It gives us direction. It helps us to develop structure and daily tasks that are going to bring us to our desired destination.
However, the timeline must be set with careful attention and our history taken into account.
In an average weight loss pursuit we can expect to be losing anywhere from 7kg or 8kg up as far as 30kg and beyond in more extravagant transformations.
It is easy to get impatient here and demand our goal be reached sooner rather than later. I get it. We are frustrated. We have tried diet after diet. Program after program. Still, however, we are not seeing the image we expected by now when we look in the mirror.
It is here when a lot of people will throw in the towel. They are several weeks in, and likely a couple kg down - and in many cases, in a much better position from a health perspective. This can be when we tell ourselves this is not enough. We want it to happen sooner. That moment we look in the mirror and think “hell yeah” - “ I did that.”
We want to fit into that outfit we used to wear, we want to feel more confident on holiday when it comes to taking our top off by the pool. We want what everybody wants, confidence and an appreciation of our body and our health.
The truth? To get here we must think of what things have led us to our current position. We didn’t become overweight and out of shape overnight. This usually happens over a longer period of time that we tend to underestimate.
Given the reality of this, it’s unrealistic to assume we can reverse this in a few weeks.
What can we do in a few weeks? We can start the process. We can start to make change. It is here we make the moves that we will thank ourselves for down the line as we get closer to the goal.
Rome was not built in a day. Your fitness goal is the same. With every week you apply yourself - you move closer to your desired endpoint. So pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and figure out something you can be doing week to week to become a healthier and happier you.
Reaching out to a health professional like myself will naturally help you get you to your goal sooner.
If you want to make the most of your time? My advice would be to invest in your health and fitness. When you pay money - you pay attention. As a result you take your goals more seriously and have someone in your corner to lean on when times get tough. No matter what you decide - take that step forward. One step at a time.
