Your Fitness: It's NCT time for your body!

Have the same standards for your body as you do for your car
Your Fitness: It's NCT time for your body!

Your NCT can be compared to your yearly medical/GP review!

Sometimes I like to compare the human body to a car.

This may sound silly, but hear me out. I honestly believe some people can look after their cars a little better than they do themselves.

While I understand a lot of this can come down to governance with looming NCT tests and personal responsibility re safety - it ponders the question, should we not have the same standards for our body?

Year on year we will service our car, change the tires, get it valeted and make sure it isn’t sitting idle for too long. Most of the time it gets everything it needs to function at its best and keep it running that way for longer. We often do this with little friction as we know it's best for the vehicle's longevity and will likely prevent any nasty surprises down the line.

It might not surprise you to hear that your body works in a similar fashion. Your NCT can be compared to your yearly medical/GP review! The better you manage things across the year - the less likely there is to be any unexpected nasty surprises.

Being proactive might look like making an effort to make sure you are consistently eating a healthy, balanced diet, moving your body daily, having pain and injury assessed at the time, instead of letting it linger, etc.

Think of a healthy diet in comparison to making sure there is enough fuel in your car and you are staying on top of oil changes. Changing tyres, brake pads and so on could be compared to getting an injury sorted by a health professional at the time.

While moving your body regularly through exercise could be compared to making sure your car isn’t left sitting in the driveway for long periods, making it harder to start the next time you hope to use it.

The more we move our body - the easier it is to stay active in our later years.

In many cases it is often more straightforward than we think when it comes to keeping our ducks in a row when it comes to our body.

It is easy to put these things on the back burner sometimes as other areas of our life take centre stage - but keeping on top of things and making your health a priority can often have long-lasting effects when it comes to your quality of life as you age.
