Your Fitness: Amazing weights!

Do we really understand what is happening to our bodies when we lift weights?

Three amazing things happen to our body as we lift weights and exercise more!

While it can be assumed that people are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of exercise and lifting weights - do we really understand what is happening to our bodies and how this helps to contribute to our quality of life?

Bone density - stronger bones - resilient bodies

When we do exercise, lifting weights in particular, we have the opportunity to expose our bones to loads that can often exceed what we are accustomed to. The more we do this, and as we gradually lift a little bit more over time, our bones begin to adapt and grow stronger.

Each time you lift a weight, you are challenging your body to get stronger and often improve your bone density. Improving your bone density helps you to build a stronger, more resilient body, which helps to prevent fractures and breaks down the line, which can often have longstanding negative effects on your mobility as you age.

Muscle - moving better, feeling better

Similar to our bones, our muscles and connective tissue can respond very positively to exercise. Similar to bone density, our muscle mass starts to decline by approximately 1-2% each year once we hit 40! Lifting weights helps to improve your strength and function, which helps to make life that little bit easier. This is something we have control over as we age - 2-3 hours per week of strength training should be more than enough for most populations to see a benefit.

Stronger heart and lungs, better fitness

Our heart and lungs naturally act as the core driver of our wellbeing. It is our engine. While exercise helps to strength our muscles and bones - it also provides a useful stimulus for our heart and lungs.

Activities that increase our heart rate and challenge our breathing are what helps our heart and lungs become fitter and more efficient. The stronger and more efficient your heart and lungs become - the better they can handle whatever life throws at you!
