Your Fitness: Healthy habits for your daily routine

Humans are meant to move, in a world where most things can be done from your phone sitting on your couch - a conscious effort becomes more and more important when it comes to actively trying to move more.

There is a wealth of information out there when it comes to health, daily routines and what each guru believes is “the perfect routine” for maximising health and wellness. In this article I hope to offer some suggestions that I practice myself. This will be far from exhaustive but should be something that each reader can apply in some shape or form to their life should they feels it helps!

Moving my body for at least 30-60 minutes is a must for me each day. To me this is the bare minimum we should be reaching for. Maybe that’s a 30-minute walk in the evening, getting to the gym for a quick session before or after work; maybe it’s going for a swim. The possibilities are endless, the benefits follow suit.

Some basic rules for my diet. We all know diet is important when it comes to our health. We likely have a generalised understanding of the concept relating to food quality and how the quality of the food we consume can play an important role in our overall health.

I firmly believe that if most people added a fibre source e.g. fruit or veg to each meal they had throughout the day, their body would thank them later down the line. Adding some fruit or veg to each meal is going to massively boost your daily fibre intake, which will have a positive impact on overall health and even play an important role in the prevention of certain cancers and other diseases.

Designated time blocks for myself to switch off and rigid rules for my sleep schedule. Sleep and stress are some areas of our lives that can really create a perfect storm for our health to deteriorate, and will often begin to heavily impact your quality of life. While every situation will be different, making a conscious effort to get at least 6-7 hours of sleep will provide a much-needed boost in wellbeing if you are consistently getting poor sleep.

This might mean getting to bed an hour or so earlier in the evening, especially if you have an early start or you know it takes you a while to fall asleep.

Reducing screen time and making an effort to prioritise sleep more is something that should be on your list of priorities.

Managing stress deserves equal attention. Where possible designate periods during the day where you can switch off for an hour or so - each day - and do something you enjoy. This is necessary, in my opinion, if you want to really start improving your quality of life.
