The devastating tragedy that befell the English family has deepened with the death of six-year-old Elliot English, who had been fighting for his life since the arson attack on his family home.

Elliot died at Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin on Friday, weeks after suffering critical injuries in the fire at the family's home at Birch Avenue in the Birchwood estate on October 13.

The young boy's death brings to five the number of members of the family who have lost their lives following the devastating fire that claimed his mother, Kim, father Philip, 12-year-old brother Callum, and nine-year-old brother Jayden.

In a statement issued this evening, the family confirmed Elliot's death "with profound sadness".

"The family has endured an unimaginable loss, and this latest bereavement has left relatives, neighbours and friends facing an overwhelming period of grief.

"At this incredibly difficult time, the family respectfully asks members of the media to allow them, along with their neighbours and friends, the time, space and privacy to come to terms with this devastating tragedy.

"We also ask that Nadia, Elliot's sister, who remains in Crumlin Hospital, be kept in everyone's thoughts and prayers.

"The family appreciates that there will be considerable public interest and that many people will wish to express their sympathy and support. However, we ask that their privacy, dignity and right to grieve be respected.

"The English family would like to thank everyone who has shown kindness, compassion and support during what has been an incomprehensibly difficult time."
