Permission Refused

Permission has been refused for a series of walking trails along the Copper Coast by an Bord Pleanala. Waterford County & City Council sought approval from the Bord to develop a series of walking trails and ancillary works along the Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark, between Stradbally and Bonmahon. Three trails in total were planned, one was to go from Stradbally to Killelton (4.5km), trail 2 along by Ballydwane Beach (1.1km) and trail 3 from Cooneen na cartan to Tra na mBo (2km) Bonmahon.

Also proposed was a viewing platform overlooking Ballydwane beach, with fencing, styles, bridges, signs, information boards, benches were also planned for along the trail routes. A number of submissions from the concerned communities were received which outlined the development could adversely effect bird species in the areas. The Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage outlined that potentially 18 per cent of the Chough population could be affected, the Department also noted that the year round use of the trials with increased numbers of visitors at a most sensitive time of breeding and post fledging, would adversely effect 7km of SPA used by Choughs, potential disturbance to breeding Peregrine Falcon, Herring Gulls was also raised. An additional submission was received from Declan McGrath, an author, who has published 'A Guide to the Waterford Coast', that accompanied his submission. The refusal will bring mixed feelings between those who wanted the trails to go ahead and those who didn't.
