Local Notes: Sale of historic mill, dog show and scout troup news

The mill is an extremely significant building

Cotton Mill

The town is thrilled with the announcement of the successful closure of an off-market sale of the iconic Cotton Mill, in Portlaw. Once a bustling hub of leather production, this historic property holds a special place in the heart of Ireland's industrial heritage. Originally the Cotton Mill was established in the early 1800s by the Malcolmson Brothers and in 1935, Irish Tanners was established, and it stood as a testament to Ireland's pursuit of economic self-sufficiency during the 1930s. Serving as one of the largest sole leather producing factories in the country, it provided employment opportunities and prosperity to the local community.

Throughout its rich history, the Cotton Mill witnessed the growth of industry in Ireland, with additional tanneries opening in Dungarvan, Gorey, and Carrick-on-Suir. Its substantial concrete building, erected in 1945, stands as a reminder of the ingenuity and resilience of generations past.

Portlaw GAA

Wishing Portlaw NS pupil, Evan Murphy the very best on Saturday as he represents Waterford in the primary game at half time in the Waterford V Tipperary hurling match in Walsh Park. Evan is our U13 goalkeeper and we wish him all the best.

10th Scout Troop

Congratulations to our challenge team winning 3rd place at the scout county challenge and a place at the phoenix. Also, congratulations to our shield team getting gold standard and winning the cooking and camp craft. Two fantastic teams we are so proud of you all.

Portlaw Utd

The U12 girls Dungarvan 1-6 Portlaw: A superb performance from our U12 girls with hat tricks from Taylor Flannery and Sophia Grace. Premier League Result: Ferrybank 0-2 Portlaw and team sponsor - The Clodagh Bar. A well deserved win recently in Abbeylands where we dominated possession but just couldn’t find the key pass. We missed a penalty midway through the second half, but shortly afterwards we took the lead when John Power whipped in a cross for Peter Woods to nod home at the back post. Our second goal arrived just on 90 minutes when a huge goal kick from our keeper, Josh Kay, caught out the Ferrybank keeper from inside his own penalty box. Another great moment for the future of the club with the introduction of 15 year old Alfie Keane as a substitute. Welcome to premier football Alfie. This win moves us to fifth in the table with league leaders Villa, up next, at home in the Ardagh Cup, on Wednesday May 8.

Meanwhile Portlaw faced Tramore Rangers in division 2B, with the sides finishing level with two goals each. Two valuable points dropped after we took an early lead with a well taken goal by Shane O’Brien. Rangers hit back with two quick goals but Robbie Allen got us level in a frantic opening 20 mins. We pressed hard in the second half for a winner and went close on three occasions. We now sit second in the league, two points behind Villa with three games to go and we play them next on Tuesday, May 7, in Villa with all to play for.
