Dungarvan swimming pool 'not dead in the water'
Dungarvan swimming pool is not 'dead in the water' just yet.
While a decision is yet to be made on a public swimming pool in Dungarvan, Waterford City and County Council have confirmed their intention to set up an ‘in-house working group’ to further explore the possibility.
Many elected members of the Waterford City and County Council were pleased with the news, with Sinn Féin's Cllr Kate O’Mahoney saying: “It’s such a critical piece of infrastructure.
"We’re so lucky to be a coastal town in Dungarvan, but with that comes a responsibility to ensure all our children are safe in the water and have the necessary skills.”
Cllr Pat Nugent of Fine Gael added: “Swimming is a lifelong skill, and I think as a coastal county we should be serious about it.”
Cllr Thomas Phelan of Labour commented that he was glad “it’s not dead in the water” and welcomed the introduction of a council working group on the issue.
The working group will be made up of elected members and council officials but may need to involve external experts if necessary, elected members were told.
Sinn Féin's Cllr Joeanne Bailey said: “We’re so lucky that in the city we have Kingfisher, I think it’ll be a great asset to any town. The Sinn Féin team are 100% behind Kate and Cllr Nugent, and it’s a pity Cllr Nugent that some of your party colleagues aren’t behind you like we are but hopefully you can get it over the line.”
