What's On In Waterford: Three nights of great music
The Ennio Morricone Experience at Theatre Royal, Waterford
Music lovers are in for a busy few days this October, with everything from classic Irish song to unforgettable film scores and contemporary performances on offer.
Waterford musician Shane Barry and his band The Night Post will take to the stage at Luca Records on Michael Street for a special live performance on Thursday, October 15, at 7pm. The gig comes after Barry was recently named the Waterford winner of the Hot Press Local Hero competition for his original song, Later Than You Think.
Barry is known for performing with large ensembles, sometimes featuring as many as 12 musicians and incorporating string and brass sections.
The Night Post, however, provides a different setting for his songwriting, bringing together musicians with backgrounds spanning rock, bluegrass and rockabilly.
The line-up features Conor Walsh on drums and vocals, Fintan Kavanagh on violin, Cian Dalton on double bass and Ger Madden on mandolin.
The event is part-funded by Waterford City and County Council through the Night-Time Economy grant for live events.
Tickets cost €7 in advance through LucaRecords.ie and €10 on the night.
Four of the most distinctive voices in Irish music will be celebrated when The Music of Irish Icons comes to Tramore's Coastguard Cultural Centre at 8pm on Friday, October 16.
The live show celebrates the music and legacy of Sinéad O’Connor, Dolores O’Riordan and The Cranberries, Shane MacGowan and The Pogues, and Christy Dignam and Aslan.
Performers Derek Flynn, Paula Weldon and Lauren Cardiff will take audiences through some of the songs that have become part of the soundtrack to Irish life.
The set includes well-known favourites such as Nothing Compares 2 U, Zombie, Linger, Dirty Old Town and Crazy World, along with plenty of other familiar songs.
Film music takes centre stage the following night at Theatre Royal as The Ennio Morricone Experience returns with a new show on Saturday, October 17 at 8pm.
The production celebrates the late Ennio Morricone, one of cinema's most celebrated composers. Among his best-known scores are A Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Cinema Paradiso and The Mission.
The ensemble show features acclaimed international solo artists Katy Kelly, Annalisa Monticelli, Francesca De Nardi and David Forti, alongside guest performers.
Tickets are €30.50.
Also returning to the Theatre Royal is Niall Breslin and The Polaris Quartet, following a sold-out national run last year.
Their latest series of performances around Ireland follows the release of Breslin's album The Place That Has Never Been Wounded and a new book.
The collaboration offers audiences a different side to Breslin's music, pairing his songwriting with the sound of the Polaris Quartet to create a distinctive live performance.
The concert is on October 16 at 8pm. Tickets are on sale for €32.50.
