The movie adaptation of Claire Keegan’s 'Small Things Like These' starring Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, recently released to strong reviews.

With a book and a film to its name, the story is now also to be brought to life in Waterford through a staged reading from Andrew Bennett, star of the Oscar-nominated 'An Cailín Ciúin'. The reading will be accompanied by new music from singer-songwriter Eleanor McEvoy ('A Woman’s Heart').

Keegan’s Booker Prize-nominated novel is an unforgettable story of hope and heroism. Described as “resonant and deeply moving” by Hilary Mantel, 'Small Things Like These' is set in an Irish rural town in the 1980s in the run up to Christmas.

As coal merchant Bill Furlong does his rounds, he discovers a girl locked away in terrible conditions in the local convent.

Unlike the silent majority, he decides to do something about it.

The upcoming marathon reading of 'Small Things Like These' taking place at Garter Lane Arts Centre, will be performed and interpreted by Andrew Bennett.

One of the finest actors of his generation, Andrew recently completed a new series for Sky Originals, 'Small Town Big Story', as well as 'Blackshore' for the BBC.

Eleanor McEvoy will join Andrew on stage to perform live original music she composed specifically for the reading.

Her critically acclaimed canon of work spans 16 albums, with numerous cover versions of her songs recorded by Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, Phil Coulter, Eliza Carthy, Jack L, and Saint Sister.

Presented by Four Rivers, 'Small Things Like These' is directed by former Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Ben Barnes, who is fresh from directing the hugely successful Jim Nolan play, 'Castel Gandolfo', which received rave reviews in Waterford earlier this year.

'Small Things Like These' will be running at Garter Lane on January 16 and January 17, at 8pm.
