A storm raged over the RSC, and at full-time, so did the controversy.
In a night of pounding rain, frayed nerves and late drama, Waterford FC finally seized a moment of fortune that has eluded them all season, snatching their first SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division win with a fiercely debated 95th-minute penalty to defeat Drogheda United 2-1.
Tommy Lonergan was the calmest man in the ground when it mattered most, firing home deep into stoppage time after a decision that left Drogheda furious and their manager Kevin Doherty sent off in protest. It capped a chaotic finale in a match that simmered rather than flowed, before boiling over in its dying seconds.
Drogheda had struck first inside six minutes in equally scrappy fashion. Brandon Kavanagh’s in-swinging corner caused panic at the near post, with Andrew Quinn’s header leading to a goalmouth scramble that appeared to be finished by Mark Doyle, though the final touch remained a matter for debate.
The visitors threatened to double their lead soon after in bizarre circumstances when Stephen McMullan’s rushed clearance ricocheted off Padraig Amond and fell kindly for Warren Davis, but his attempted lob drifted narrowly over. Drogheda continued to press, pinning Waterford deep, with Thomas Oluwa heading straight at McMullan from another Kavanagh delivery.
Waterford, under pressure for much of the opening half, found their equaliser on 35 minutes through persistence and a dose of direct play. Will Johnson’s long throw caused havoc, flicked on by Kevin Long and Amond before Lonergan reacted quickest to poke home from close range.
Drogheda came agonisingly close to restoring their lead moments later when Davis carved open the home defence with a superb run and pass, only for Doyle’s effort to crash back off the far post. McMullan then produced a stunning stop in first-half stoppage time, tipping Shane Farrell’s effort over the crossbar to keep the sides level.
The second half, played under relentless rain, became a cagey, stop-start affair. Injuries to Drogheda centre-backs Quinn and Conor Keeley disrupted their rhythm, while clear chances were scarce. Frustration grew, reflected when Doherty was booked for his protests midway through the half.
The key flashpoints arrived late. On 86 minutes, former Blue Oluwa appeared to be brought down under pressure from Hayden Cann, but referee Neil Doyle waved away strong appeals for a penalty.
Moments later came the decision that defined the night. Lonergan chased a bouncing ball into the box and went down under contact from Drogheda keeper Fynn Talley. Doyle pointed to the spot, sparking furious protests. Doherty’s reaction earned him a red card, but the decision stood.
Lonergan stepped up and, despite Talley guessing correctly, blasted his penalty beyond the keeper to secure a dramatic victory — and at last, a slice of luck Waterford could call their own.
