From Friday to Sunday, the World Indoor Championships took place in Torun, Poland, and a team of athletes from Ireland competed in them. On Sunday, the final day of the Championships, Ireland won one medal in the Pentathlon, an event with five events held on the same day. It came from an athlete from Drogheda, Kate O'Connor, who had previously won silver medals at both the World Indoor and Outdoor Championships. 

On Sunday last, the five events she had to do were 60 metres hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and finally the 800 metres. For the record she had a time of 8.23 seconds in the 60 metres hurdles but outside her best time of 8.30, in the high jump she equalled her best distance of 1.81 metres, in the shot putt she had a personal best of 14.70 metres, in her long jump she also had a personal best on 6.38 metres and in the 800 metres had another big personal best of 2 minutes 10 26 seconds, overall a very solid performance on the day. 

Other Irish athletes who figured prominently in Poland were Mark English, UCD, in the 800 metres, winning his first round and 4th in his semifinal, just losing out on a place in the final; Nick Griggs, Tyrone, in the 3000 metres final, where he finished 9th; and Andrew Corcoran, Dublin, in the 3000 metres, where he finished 13th.

EVAN FITZGERALD 

The Annual Mallow 10-mile Road Race was held last Sunday morning, and Evan Fitzgerald, West Waterford, finished third in 51 minutes 56 seconds. The race was won by Paul Moloney, Mallow, in 51.37, with Sean Daun, St. Finbarr's, Cork, second in 51.55.

123.IE NATIONAL JUVENILE INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 

The 123.i.e., National Juvenile Indoor Championships Track and Field Events are on Saturday and Sunday next in TUS, Athlone, with competitions underway both days at 10 am in events from u12 to 19. There will be many athletes from Waterford clubs in action at the two-day meeting.

CARRICK ON SUIR ROAD RUNNERS 5 KM BALLYNEAL 

An early reminder that the first race in the Outfield Spots Series is the Carrick on Suir Road Runner Series 5 km in Ballyneal, a few miles outside Carrick on Suir, on Friday, April 17, at 7.30pm.

ANNUAL COLLIGAN LEAGUE 

West Waterford A.C. will once again host The Mark Mason Financial 5-week league in Colligan Wood (by kind permission of Coillte), starting on Wednesday evening, the 1st April at 6.30pm, and continuing for another 4 Wednesdays: the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th of April, at 6:30 pm also. The cost for all 5 nights is €20, and the league is open to all members and non-members over 16. The venue is Colligan Wood just outside Dungarvan. From Dungarvan, take the N72 and then the R672 to Clonmel. Colligan Wood is approx. 1 mile along this road. Distances are:2 laps flat, approx. 2.6 miles,3 laps flat, approx. 4 miles and 5-mile hills.
