Waterford native Mick Morrissey was a twice winner in recent weeks for his brilliant run as a co-driver on the World Rally Championship Masters stage. The 76-year-old is world champion after landing the final title in this year’s World Rally Championship that concluded with the FORUM8 Rally Japan with Morrissey capturing the WRC Masters Cup Co-Driver award.

Affectionately known in World Rally circles as “MJ”, the Kilmeaden man was co-driving with Wexford’s Eamonn Boland in their Hertz liveried Ford Fiesta Rally2, finished sixth in the WRC Masters Cup category and twenty-sixth in overall classification, despite collecting a thirty minute penalty for a timing infringement in the finals. Morrissey won the title by a margin of three points from Italian co-driver Flavio Zanella.

Morrissey, who hails from Blacknock in Kilmeaden, was in Kigali, Rwanda, at the annual FIA Awards ceremony recently where he was presented with his award. This annual event is to present the various championship winners, Formula One, World Rally Championship, and the various racing and rally championships worldwide, with their trophies.

The Premier award for Formula One was presented to this year’s winner, Max Verstappen, by the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame. Mick was there to be presented with his award for winning the Masters Cup co-driver in the World Rally Championship (WRC). His season starts again with the Monte Carlo Rally in January. This will be his 15th time competing in Monte Carlo.

Mick was also surprised recently when he received the Motorsport Ireland Outstanding Achievement award for 2024 where he received a spontaneous standing ovation at the presentation. Not bad for a man going on 77!

Congratulations to Mick and here’s to many more motor racing titles.
