The Waterford hurlers have a new manager tonight, as the Déise County Board have announced Ballydurn's Peter Queally as their new boss after the end of Davy Fitzgerald's reign as boss a number of weeks ago.

Peter Queally, who starred in the White and Blues of Waterford for many years as a player, served as a selector in both Davy Fitzgerald's terms with Waterford and will now take up the baton as manager along with Tipperary's Eoin Kelly who was also a selector, with Queally, during Davy Fitz's term.

Queally has managed a host of club teams including Passage and Roanmore in the Waterford championship and coached Sarsfields of Cork for a number of seasons.

Along with Eoin Kelly of Mullinahone, he will be joined in the backroom team Lismore and Waterford legend, Dan Shanahan, who previously served as a county selector under Derek McGrath.

Current Ballygunner and former Waterford player will be the Performance Coach, while John Matthews will be the S&C coach.

The selection committee who appointed this backroom team was ex-Waterford hurlers, former city and county chief executive Michael Walsh (Ballyduff Upper), Eoin Murphy (Shamrocks), Seamus Prendergast (Ardmore), county secretary Pat Flynn and vice-chairman Neil Moore.

Peter Queally becomes the first Waterford man to take the Déise hotseat since Páraic Fanning in September 2018. McGrath was the one previous to that in 2013 and before him Michael Ryan in ’11.

Waterford will begin their 2025 season in the new seven-team Division 1B along with Antrim, Carlow, Dublin, Laois, Offaly and Westmeath. They have a bye weekend in the first round of the Munster SHC before they face into two home games back-to-back as they did this year. In Round 2, Clare are due to come to Walsh Park before Limerick the following weekend.
