Letter to the Editor: Penalty points and the dreaded N25 speed camera
Static camera
Dear Editor,
This is an "open letter" to all who could have some impact over the issue of the dreaded speed camera on the dreaded N25. And before you dismiss this as "another one", please read on.
Let me start by introducing myself, I am a self-employed person with a small company in south Kilkenny near Kilmacow, where I reside with my family. We service and supply industrial heating equipment all over Ireland and beyond.
I am the owner, together with my sister; we run a tidy little company. It is a "service providing company" with many clients, like large, medium and small factories and some hospitals, including Waterford hospital. As we are a nationwide essential service provider we do a large amount of kilometres around this beautiful country. (I will not mention the current fuel prices, that's a whole different battle for another day, and I also think that we in Ireland are not too bad as such.)
I do between 80 and 90,000 kilometres per year; I would describe myself as a responsible and safe driver and try to always stay within the rules at all (admittedly most...) times, but mistakes are made by all. I take responsibility for my actions, whether this is for my work or indeed for my driving.
On March 16 and March 20, I was driving from my house in Kilmacow to a job in Enniscorthy; this unfortunately takes me past the static speed camera on the N25 at Glenmore. This, in turn, will give me six penalty points that are with me for three years (in my opinion this is way too long; this should be a year for speed limits broken under 15km/hour).
There are many people complaining about this as the signage coming up to this static speed camera is, to say the least, poor and easily missed. These points will stay with me for three years.
I think being over the speed limit by only eight and 10 kilometres is not in the realm of "dangerous driving", especially when this road was 100 kilometres per hour back in October 2025.
I have paid the fine and I'm not looking for a refund. It's not about the fine, if I break the speed limit and I break the law, I have to pay the fine - this is acceptable, but it's the points that I have the bigger issue with.
Niels Kleijn,
Kilmacow
