Waterford to celebrate Positive Ageing Week
Waterford Older People's Council is marking Positive Ageing Week with a packed programme of free events.
Older people across Waterford City and County are being invited to enjoy a week of music, movement, storytelling, history and social activities.
Waterford Older People's Council has organised a programme of free events running from Monday, September 28, to Friday, October 2, aimed at encouraging people to stay active, connected and engaged as they grow older.
The programme gets underway at Central Library in Waterford City on Monday, September 28, at 11am with 'Back to the Future - How to be 50 at 80!'
The talk will be presented by Ray Fuller, a retired professor of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin and Vice-Chair of the Waterford Older People's Council Executive, and will explore positive ageing and how people can continue to enjoy an active and fulfilling life as they get older.
A second presentation will take place at Dungarvan Library on Friday, October 2, at 2.30pm.
Those interested in trying something different can take part in an Introduction to Lawn Bowls at The Causeway Tennis Bowls Club in Abbeyside, Dungarvan.
Free sessions will take place on Monday, September 28, at 11am and again on Friday, October 2, at 2.30pm. Places must be booked in advance.
Local history will also be featured during the week, with a Historic Walking Tour of Dungarvan Town taking place on Wednesday, September 30, from 3pm to 5pm.
The free tour will allow participants to learn more about Dungarvan’s history while getting outside and meeting others.
Booking is essential, and places can be reserved by calling 085 1451872.
Meanwhile, actor Michael Power will lead a special Storytelling Workshop at St Brigid’s Family Resource Centre on Friday, October 2, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
The workshop will introduce participants to the art of storytelling and offer advice on how to share stories from their own lives warmly and engagingly. Admission is free, and participants are encouraged to bring a friend.
Music and dancing will also be on the agenda, with a Tea Dance at St Paul’s Parish Centre in Waterford City on Thursday, October 1, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
Richie Hayes will provide the music for the afternoon, while the free event will also include a raffle, tea and treats.
Several other events are being held across Waterford for Positive Ageing Week through Waterford Sports Partnership, with older people encouraged to explore the full programme and choose activities that appeal to them.
Positive Ageing Week celebrates the contribution older people make to their families and communities while highlighting the importance of friendship, activity and continued learning throughout life.
Waterford Older People’s Council is encouraging people across the city and county to get involved, whether that means taking to the dance floor, exploring local history, trying lawn bowls or sharing their own stories.
