Waterford TD Conor McGuinness has written to TG4 asking the outlet to reconsider its decision not to hold a presidential election in Irish.

The Sinn Féin TD shared the letter to the Director General and News Editor in a post on social media and said:

“I believe the decision not to host a debate in our national language is deeply unfair, unprecedented, and undermines the ability of Irish speaking voters to engage in this election on the same basis as English speakers - all to spare the blushes of two candidates who are happy to seek the job but never bothered their backsides to improve their competence in our national language and the first official language of the state.”
