The busy quays in Waterford City are set for disruptions from today as multi-phase drainage and road works are planned to take place on Meagher's Quay and Coal Quay.

The council warned there will be an impact on traffic, particularly at peak hours, over a number of months.

Waterford City and County Council, alongside BAM Ireland, has advised the public that traffic management measures will be put in during the works.

The public works will be based on the roads to the east and west of the Clock Tower as part of the new South Plaza public realm development - the redevelopment of the city side of the quays.

The council said the traffic management has been planned in a way to minimise disruption to road users from today, March 19, until June 2025.

In addition to the planned relocation of bus stops, the road works will see the temporary closure of: footpaths, cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, single-traffic lanes, as well as off-street and on-street parking spaces

In a statement, Waterford City and County Council and BAM said they apologised for any inconvenience caused and said they hope for the cooperation of the public during the roadworks.

The works are part of the new South Plaza public realm development project which will see the redevelopment of the city side of the quays following the construction of the sustainable transport bridge to the Ferrybank side of the river.
