Waterford News & Star journalist nominated for prestigious Law Society award

Waterford News & Star journalist Shannon Sweeney.
Waterford News & Star journalist Shannon Sweeney has been nominated in the forthcoming Justice Media Awards, which recognise outstanding print and broadcast journalism that contributes to the public’s understanding of justice, the legal system, and legal issues.
Ms Sweeney was nominated in Print/ Online Journalism (Local) for her article 'Man found not guilty by reason of insanity for explosion that rocked Waterford city', which was published on December 31, 2024 in the Waterford News & Star.
The awards are the longest continuously running media awards in Ireland. Last year they received a record-breaking 400 entries with 120 of these entries making the shortlist.

Ms Sweeney's article was about the trial of a Waterford man who, in the midst of a mental health episode, burned down his house in Ballytruckle in Waterford city, causing an explosion and damaging the homes on either side.
The man had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and both the State (prosecution) and defence were in agreement.
This made the case a most unusual one and a good example of a verdict so popular on TV and in movies but in reality shrouded in misinformation and myth.
The story was also an opportunity to explain to the community what had happened on a very frightening night.
"I am delighted that Shannon has been recognised for this excellent piece of journalism, highlighting an important and very difficult case, both in terms of the law and justice, and for all those people who were impacted as a result, including the defendant," said Mary Frances Ryan, Editor, Waterford News & Star.
"It is a superb example of public service reporting, and reminds us of the crucial role played by regional newspaper journalists, who, through their professionalism and integrity, bring to public attention stories that otherwise would not be known outside the four walls of our courts."
The Law Society of Ireland Justice Media Awards 2025 take place at the Law Society, Blackhall Place in Dublin city, this Wednesday, June 25.
