Waterford neutrality roadshow decries proposed removal of Triple Lock

Niamh Ní Bhriain, Transnational Alliance, and Fionn Wallace, Keep Ireland Neutral, speak at the Tower Hotel.

A ‘neutrality roadshow’ arrived in Waterford on October 21, protesting proposed legislation that would remove the ‘Triple Lock.’

The event was hosted by Neutrality Now, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s South East branch and the Waterford Council of Trade Unions, at the Tower Hotel.

Speakers complained about Ireland’s alleged drift to a more militant state and “the growing influence of private and foreign interests in national decision-making”.

Speakers said a motion to solidify the ‘Triple Lock’ would be brought to Waterford Council.

The ‘Triple Lock’ refers to the process on how Ireland decides to send its Defence Forces overseas. That process involves approval from the UN, a decision from Government and a vote in the Dáil.

Earlier this year, Government proposed changes that would remove the requirement for UN approval while also increasing the amount of troops that can be deployed without a Dáil vote from 12 to 50.
