Waterford man caught with large amount of cannabis at Garda checkpoint

Judge Paula Murphy enquired about the suitability of the man to complete community service.

A man, who was caught by Gardaí with a large amount of cannabis, has been sentenced to 200 hours of community service.

The man, Adrian Lanigan (32), of Apartment 1, 18 High Street, Waterford city, was stopped at a Garda checkpoint on June 1, 2024, at Exchange Street, Waterford. He was charged with both possession of cannabis and sale or supply of cannabis.

Gardaí observed a strong smell of cannabis from the car and conducted a search.

They found €2,200 worth of cannabis herb hidden in the compartment of a hoover in the back seat.

Lanigan was the passenger in the car and made an admission to owning the cannabis after the driver told gardaí that it wasn’t his own.

Lanigan said that he used cannabis medicinally and that buying it in large quantities is less risky and less expensive.

No evidence of drug dealing or any monetary proceeds from drug dealing were found in his home.

Solicitor Kenneth Cunningham said that the man has since dealt with his cannabis misuse problems.

Judge Paula Murphy enquired about the suitability of the man to complete community service.

A probation officer informed Judge Murphy that he is suitable and willing to do so.

He was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, in lieu of a six-month prison sentence.
