The victim was 'impacted profoundly' by the robbery.

A Waterford man will spend two years in prison for robbing a city centre takeaway.

Patrick Manning, of 28 Johnstown, Waterford city, was sentenced at Waterford Circuit Court by Judge Eugene O'Kelly.

Manning (25) entered the Sheela Palace takeaway on the night of December 1, 2023, wearing a black scarf, jacket and balaclava. He held a 15cm long knife and took €200 from the establishment, holding a worker at knifepoint. He was apprehended by Gardaí the following day and made full admissions to the crime.

Judge O'Kelly noted that the victim was deeply affected by the ordeal and had to leave Waterford. The court heard that Manning jumped on the takeaway counter and caused the victim to fear for their life. The victim described the event as "terrifying". Manning was sentenced to two years and eight months, with the final eight months suspended in mitigation.
