Over 900 speeding fines cancelled due to N25 camera location error

Gardaí refunded 208 motorists.

Over 900 speeding fines on the N25 were cancelled by Gardaí due to speed camera processing issues.

In June 2025, An Garda Síochána realised that the Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPN) processing system had incorrectly listed the location as Ballynamona, Mullinavat, Kilkenny. The correct location was Glenmore.

Gardaí were alerted to the issue after a motorist wrote to them contesting the location of a speeding offence.

According to a new report by the State's Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG), between May 2025 and June 2025, An Garda Síochána incorrectly issued 914 speeding fines due to the error.

According to the C&AG report: "The error was rectified on the FCPN processing system on 30 June 2025, when the correct location was uploaded. The static speed detection camera resumed its operations from 4 July 2025."

Gardaí refunded 208 motorists who had already paid the charges. The N25 error has cost Gardaí a staggering €146,240, according to the auditing team.

The speed camera resumed operations on July 4, 2025.

National Report

The report also showed that Gardaí had to pay back €299,360 in erroneous FCPN charges to motorists on the N17 in Mayo.

In February 2025, Gardaí and speed camera operators GoSafe identified an issue with the N17 speed camera. The camera was working 'effectively' but did not have a valid certification of calibration.

According to the report: "The camera on the N17 was operating effectively but it did not have a valid certification of calibration. The static camera had become operational on 20 December 2024.

"Between the date the camera became operational and when the error was identified, 1,871 speeding fixed charge notices had been issued by An Garda Síochána."

Gardaí paid refunds to 923 motorists who had paid the fines: "Motorists had paid fines at both the standard rate of €160 and at the increased rate of €240 that applies if the fine is not paid within 28 days.

"The GoSafe contract in place at the time of the N17 and N25 incidents did not contain a provision for the recovery of losses in the event of a failure originating from GoSafe."
