Waterford journalist wins major award
Shannon Sweeney was recognised for her in-depth reporting on the homeless crisis in Waterford.
Congratulations are in order for Waterford News & Star's own Shannon Sweeney after an amazing win at this year's Local Ireland Media Awards.
At the awards ceremony in Mullingar, Shannon scooped the award for Feature Journalist of the Year. Award show host Marty Whelan spoke to Shannon about her in-depth reportage on the homeless crisis in Waterford.
She has written extensively about families fighting to stay together amidst homelessness, charity Waterford Helping the Homeless and the local authority's response to the crisis. Shannon was one of seven nominations for the Waterford News & Star.
President of Local Ireland and Managing Director of the Southern Star, Seán Mahon, said: "It was great to see both experienced and young journalists, as well as talented digital and advertising personnel, winning awards for the excellent work they do for their respective local newspapers.
"Ultimately, the key message that 'life is local' came through again and again at the event and reinforced how vitally important the role of local newspapers."
