Waterford Chaplain stabbed at Galway army barracks

Gardaí are investigating an assault at an army barracks in Galway, where a Waterford Chaplain was seriously injured.
At Renmore Army Barracks, Galway, on Thursday, August 15, Gardaí, including members of the Garda Armed Support Unit, responded to the incident at approximately 10.45pm.
Fr Paul F. Murphy of Waterford was stabbed a number of times during the incident. The chaplain, who is in his 50s, was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment of injuries that are serious but not life-threatening.
Fr Murphy has recently shared his gratitude for those who wished him well on social media: "Friends, thanks for your prayers, love and concern. Sorry that I can't reply to all messages and take all the calls coming my way."
"I'm doing ok, just awaiting surgery," added Fr Murphy.
"All will be well," he concluded.
A teenage male youth was restrained by members of the Defence Forces and arrested by Gardaí at the scene.
The male youth is currently detained at a Garda Station in the north western region.
The scene is currently preserved and a technical examination will be carried out today by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.
Garda investigations are ongoing.
