Transformation of care home into houses and apartments is rejected

A planning application seeking to transform the Maypark House care home facility into residential houses and apartments has been refused by the local planning authority.

The plans submitted in September 2025 sought to construct a total of 29 new residential units on the grounds of the former care home, which closed in 2022 after over forty years in operation.

Demolition works to the facility's main building and a series of new extensions to buildings on the site were also proposed.

Car parking, bicycle parking and a new internal one-way driveway were planned.

Last week, Waterford City and County Council’s planning department refused permission for the development to proceed.

The authority stated that the developer failed to demonstrate in the planning application that the development would not have adverse impacts on the integrity of the Lower River Suir Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
