Waterford allocated €9 million for active travel and greenway projects

Dock and Abbey Road allocated €234,457 for infrastructure works. 

Twenty-two Waterford projects have been allocated €9.1 million.

Waterford TD and Minister of State for Planning & Local Government, John Cummins, welcomed the announcement, which is part of a €360 million Government funding package to support active travel and greenways.

“I am delighted to welcome this significant allocation of €9 million for Waterford.

“Today’s important allocation further displays this government's commitment to improving walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure across the county,” said Minister Cummins.

The funding is part of the Active and Sustainable Transport Investment Programme.

It supports the development of walking and cycling infrastructure in villages, towns and cities.

Among the major projects receiving funding is €500,000 towards the development of bus shelters throughout the county and the further allocation of €200,000 to the Waterford North Quays project.

Other notable allocations included the Tramore Ring Road, which received €4,060,000 and the Tramore Waterford Urban Greenway was given €55,000.

Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport Jerry Buttimer, who made the announcement, said Greenway funding is particularly welcome.

“I particularly welcome today’s funding announcement for Greenway projects, which have been a valued addition to rural Ireland in recent years through showcasing our beautiful landscape, bringing visitors to overlooked areas and helping small local businesses to thrive. Greenways also provide an outdoor recreational facility that all members of the community can enjoy. I look forward to the delivery of new and expanded routes in the coming years,” said Minister Buttimer.

Also allocated was €234,457 for the infrastructure works on the Dock and Abbey Road. 

The council was allocated €1,100,000 for active travel staff costs.

The Active Travel Rapid Scheme was allocated three sums of €13,333 for phases one to three.

The phases are (1) Manor Street and Cork Road from Johns Lane to the Kingsmeadow Roundabout, (2)Cork Road-Kingsmeadow to Paddy Brown Road and (3) Cork Road-Paddy Brown Road to Whitfield Hospital.

The inner ring road project received €40,000.

Three schools have received funding under the Safer Route to School Scheme between €20,000 and €300,000.

Those are St John of Gods National School on the Passage Road, Whitechurch National School in Cappagh and Scoil an Bhaile Nua on the Newtown Road.
