MEP Billy Kelleher paid a special visit to the fourth-class students of Butlerstown NS (Scoil Mhuire) this week.

Upon his arrival, the children greeted their special guest in the languages of all 27 member countries of the EU, before treating him to a wonderful presentation.

They also showcased projects, sang in French and as Gaeilge, and recited a poem by W.B. Yeats.

Student Council member Mollie explained that learning about cultures, flags, languages and traditions has helped the class to understand how different countries work together as part of the EU.

Mark, also a Student Council representative, added that thinking about Ireland's place in the EU has made the class realise that “as children in Waterford, we are connected to Europe in our everyday lives”.

Meanwhile, Harper spoke about diversity, while Breen and Amy highlighted the importance of our own Irish culture.

The children were then given the opportunity to pose questions to Mr. Kelleher.

Questions ranged from what his typical day as an MEP looked like, to his favourite country to visit in Europe, which he said was Italy.

With a strong farming tradition in Butlerstown, the pupils asked him his views on the Mercosur Trade Deal. He stated unequivocally that he is opposing the deal.

Mr. Kelleher praised the children's excellent work and their dedicated teacher, Mrs Elaine Crossan.

He went on to explain to the children that “to respect and accept difference and diversity is a fundamental aspect of being a human being.”

He outlined the evolution of Ireland's economy since joining the EU in 1973 and referenced the work of peacemaker John Hume.

He also reminded the children of the importance of having a sense of strong community spirit and commended the powerful community that has been built and nurtured in Butlerstown NS.

The school's Board of Management Chairperson, Mrs Nora Widger thanked Mr. Kelleher for his kindness in visiting the school and engaging so thoughtfully with the children.
