UHW crossing lights out 'twice a week'

'Why is that? Is there some kind of electrical fault? Why can't we just solve that?'
UHW crossing lights out 'twice a week'

Councillor Declan Barry said that the lights were going out 'once or twice' a week.

Lights are constantly going out in one of the busiest areas of the city, potentially due to a 'capacity issue' with ESB.

The light outages have been reported at several of the most active intersections around University Hospital Waterford (UHW), Ardkeen Shopping Centre and the Solas Centre.

Independent Councillor Declan Barry said at the recent Metro meeting: "Continuously, maybe once or twice a week, the pedestrian lights are going off on the roads there from the (UHW) hospital roundabout to the Farronshoneen Roundabout. The one outside Grow HQ was out for three or four days."

Capacity issue

Cllr Barry included the lights outside the Solas Cancer Support Centre as another problem area, saying: "I can count 10 times when it's been off this year. It's only back on three, four days and then it's off again."

Projecting his voice against the ever deteriorating acoustics of the Long Room, he asked: "Why is that? Is there some kind of electrical fault? Why can't we just solve that?"

Senior Executive Paul Johnston replied that he "would have to check" on the area.

He said: "There are some capacity issues there with ESB on the ring road in that area in general. It may be related to that but I would have to come to you with a definitive response on that one."
