Locals in Tramore gathered at the Majestic Hotel last week for a coffee, a chat, and to support the vital work of Waterford Hospice.

The event was part of Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning, the main annual fundraiser for hospice and home care services nationwide.

In addition to their participation in the national coffee morning, the Tramore Hospice Movement host regular coffee mornings and events every month, raising thousands to support the hospice.

Noeline Power, who has been involved for nearly a decade, said that during their regular fundraising events the entire community comes together to offer support.

"Every month we take in maybe €1,300 or €1,400. The Majestic Hotel and businesses across Tramore are outstanding and we have a fantastic committee.

"There's a lot of new faces here this morning, and when they come once, they’ll come back again, because everyone mixes and has a lovely chat together."

Stalwart of Waterford Hospice, Des Kelly, has been involved since 1982. He said that the fundraising events are vital for the upkeep of the hospice.

"The hospice is mainly funded now by the government, so what we do is provide funds for little extra comforts for the patients. The hospice was very much always a community-based effort."

Also showing support on the day was Cllr Eamon Quinlan.

"Tramore has the distinction of being the highest fundraising branch of the hospice fundraising movement anywhere in the country," he said.

"Mornings like this are not only for a worthy and good cause, but community events like this are very important. They help underpin community services and community facilities."
