A teenager has avoided a conviction for trying to sell drugs to a plain clothes garda in Tramore.

The defendant was a minor at the time and therefore can not be named.

He appeared before Judge John Cheatle at Waterford District Court charged with possession of drugs with the intent to sell or supply, and with the theft of two vapes in 2023.

The defendant pleaded guilty to both offences.

Inspector Doyle told the court that the defendant approached a plain clothes garda in Tramore and offered him cocaine.

An operation was being carried out at the time, the inspector confirmed.

The court heard that the teenager had two previous convictions, one for assault causing harm, which he is appealing, and the other for being intoxicated in a public place.

The solicitor acting for the defendant, Ken Cunningham, said his client left home at a young age and has since engaged with Focus Ireland, which has helped him get back on his feet.

He is now in full-time employment and “flourishing.” Mr Cunningham said his client had with him, compensation of €20 for the stolen vapes.

Judge Cheatle ordered the defendant to pay €300 to the court poor box within five months.

If he does so, the drugs charge will be struck out.

All other matters were taken into consideration.
