SETU Arena in Waterford provided the venue recently for the Rubik's Irish Championship for Rubik's cube speedsolving.

The international competition had over 200 competitors from more than 20 countries including Australia, South Africa, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, China, Mongolia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia to newm but a few.

The new National Champion of Ireland is CJ Furey, who won the final with an average time of 7.03 seconds. 

CJ is the first new national champion in 10 years.

Overall, 17 new National Champions were crowned across all of the official categories that were contested.

They included one-handed solving, blindfolded solving, different sized cubes than the regular 3x3, such as 2x2, 4x4 and up to 7x7.

There were also different shaped puzzles such as the pyraminx and the megaminx, and a 12-sided puzzle.

The organisers were delighted with the success of the event and congratulated all of the competitors.
