A SETU business academic has been re-appointed to the Executive of the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS).
John Maher was reappointed to the position at the Counci's recent AGM in York University Toronto. Mr Maher will appointed the role of Treasurer by the Presidents of the individual national associations of Canadian Studies which include Brazil, Central European Countries, China, Cuba, France, German Speaking countries, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, African countries, Russia, Spain, UK, and the US. The ICCS provides doctoral research bursaries which fund researchers to travel to Canada and spend time at a host university or research Institution there.
The Council recognises excellence in Canadian Studies with respect to doctoral dissertations in French and English, books written in these languages, and service to the discipline over many years in the form of a Governor General's award.

John will serve as one of three executive directors in the role as Treasurer and has responsibilities for the Council's financial management, accounts, and investment policy for the endowment fund managed by the National Bank of Canada.
The participation with the ICCS underlines SETU's engagement with Canada and Canadian scholarship, all the more important as universities there may now participate as partners with SETU in European funding opportunities under the EU Horizon programme.
Similarly SETU may also partner with Canadian Universities in some research streams provided by the National Research Council in Canada.
This builds on the relationship already established with Memorial University in Newfoundland. (MUN).
Access to Newfoundland from Ireland has been improved in 2025 by the provision of direct flights by WestJet which flies direct to St John's from Dublin until October this year.
Interaction with MUN is a key ingredient of the activity by the Centre for Newfoundland and Labrador Studies at SETU and for communities in the wider region.
In semester 1 of 2025-26 a further set of themed lectures with be hosted by this Centre, building on the Three Sisters series established last year. See https://wit-ie.libguides.com/the-three-sisters-lecture-series
