Person rescued from river in Waterford City

A person in difficulty was successfully rescued from the River Suir on Monday night.

In a post on social media, Waterford City River Rescue said they, along with the fire service and gardaí, Rescue 117 and the National Ambulance Service, were tasked following a report of a person entering the river.

The person was successfully rescued by Waterford City Fire Service.

A member of the public attempted to assist the person in difficulty and was brought safely ashore by Waterford City River Rescue.

“We would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank him for his courageous and selfless actions.

“We would also like to thank all members of the public who promptly contacted the emergency services by calling 999/112. We wish everyone involved a speedy recovery.

“This incident highlights the importance of immediately contacting the emergency services if you witness someone in difficulty on or near the water.

“Our thanks to all emergency service personnel involved in the successful response, said Waterford City River Rescue.

The group would like to reiterate the importance of a quick call to the emergency services if a member of the public sees a peron in difficulty.

If you see a person in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Irish Coast Guard, who will dispatch the services needed to the scene.

And do not assume somebody else has already made that call.
