'New era' for businesses in hard-hit Waterford community

There are lots of events happening in Ferrybank

After many difficult years that have seen businesses and pubs close their doors in Ferrybank, there is a renewed sense of optimism with the announcement of an exciting new hospitality venture in the heart of the community.

A new chapter is about to begin for the landmark Village Bar building on Fountain Street, with local woman Helen Meyler revealing that the new establishment will be known as Helen's Bar and Restaurant.

Helen, daughter of the late Jack and Ann (née Flynn), St Killian's Place, together with her husband and business partner Mark McMahon, brings a wealth of experience to the project, having successfully operated The Bistro at Tramore Golf Club and previously The View Bistro at Waterford Golf Club.

Plans for the new premises include an 80-seat restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, evening meals and Sunday lunch, along with coffee and casual bistro-style dining.

An outdoor seating area is also planned, which Helen hopes will become a welcoming gathering place for families, local sports teams and friends looking to enjoy a meal or drink in a relaxed setting.

Its close proximity to the local church will also make it suitable for funeral gatherings. For Helen, the venture is particularly special as it brings her back to her roots.

A native of Ferrybank with strong connections to the Flynn and Meyler families, she is delighted to be investing in the area where she grew up before moving to Slieverue.

The restaurant is expected to open in September, with final preparations currently underway. The removal of the property's long-standing "For Sale" sign this week has already generated considerable excitement locally.

Importantly, the development ensures that the historic Village Bar building will remain an active part of community life.

While the premises had previously been linked to redevelopment plans, the current owner is understood to be retaining the property and leasing it to Helen and Mark, securing its future as a thriving hospitality venue.

EUROSPAR

There is further positive news for Ferrybank as plans advance to bring the long-vacant retail unit back into use as a newly refurbished EUROSPAR convenience store.

Triode Newhill Management Services Limited has confirmed that, subject to contract, the premises is in the process of being leased to a local retailer.

Legal contracts have been issued and discussions are at an advanced stage, representing a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the site.

Confirming the progress, Chief Operating Officer David Bagnall said the leasing process is progressing well, with contracts already issued and legal matters currently being finalised.

Attention will now turn to the future of the Dunnes Stores development in the shopping centre.

Together, these investments have the potential to further strengthen Ferrybank's retail offering.

Local support for these new businesses will be vital in helping to ensure a vibrant and thriving community for years to come.
