A schedule of events to coincide with National Bike Week has been launched in Waterford.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) and Waterford City and County Council launched the Bike Week 2026 Activities on Monday.

The initiative will run nationwide from Saturday, May 9th to Sunday, May 17th and will be a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling.

There will be hundreds of family-friendly events around the country - including in Waterford - including heritage cycles, maintenance workshops, and learn-to-cycle courses.

Among the events taking place in Waterford - for all ages and abilities - will be the Waterford Greenway Family Teatime cycle, where people will be able to experience the beauty of the Greenway like never before and pedal through the scenic route illuminated by the moonlight.

A spokesperson for Waterford City & County Council commented: "If you’re an early riser, the Dawn Cycle is the perfect opportunity to soak up the sunrise and seaside views from the city to Tramore, or if you prefer to combine art with your cycling, the Waterford Walls Cycle takes in the stunning murals scattered throughout the city so you can enjoy a leisurely bike ride with fellow art enthusiasts."

!There will also be an interesting series of workshops and talks on everything from bicycle maintenance to cycle training for older adults and a social cycling introduction," she added.

All 31 local authority areas are involved in Bike Week with events organised jointly through the local authorities and local sports partnerships.

Commenting on the initiative, National Transport Authority (NTA) CEO, Anne Shaw, said: "The engagement with Bike Week from all the local authorities has again, far exceeded expectations. It’s fantastic to see so many events taking place all around the country. There really is something for everyone this year and I would encourage everybody to get involved.”

Meanwhile, Emma Smyth, Bike Week coordinator with Waterford City and County Council said: “The events are versatile and broad ranging, to suit the young and not so young, and also those who are accomplished cyclists and those new to the joys of cycling."

"Coupled with that, it’s a great opportunity to get out and see our beautiful city and countryside whilst getting some fresh air and exercise, in a safe and welcoming setting," she said.
