McGuinness back inclusive sensory play space in County Waterford

Deputy Conor McGuinness
Sinn Féin TD for Waterford, Conor D. McGuinness, has made a formal submission to Waterford City & County Council in support of the proposed Inclusive Sensory Play Space at Abbeyside, in Dungarvan.
“This is a well-designed, community-led project that will make a real difference to autistic children and their families across West Waterford,” said Deputy McGuinness, when commenting on the issue to Waterford News & Star and waterford-news.ie.
The proposed play space is designed to support the sensory, emotional and developmental needs of autistic children and will include quiet zones, wide paths and spaces for both solitary and group play.
It will be developed in collaboration with Autism Support Dungarvan and shaped by the lived experience of local families.
“It’s a practical and inclusive facility, and for many families, it will be the first time their child can safely and confidently access a local play space," said Deputy McGuinness, who also described the project as a key step towards making Dungarvan an Autism Friendly Town.
“But more than that, this is about designing public infrastructure that works for everyone - recognising different needs and responding with action that delivers," he added.
In his formal submission, Deputy McGuinness also acknowledged that some residents may have concerns over the proposal but said these can be addressed.
“As with any development, it’s right that local views are heard," he said.
"But this is a modest, well-considered proposal," he added.
He went on to comment: "Simple steps can be taken at development stage, including screening, layout, and access design, to mitigate any potential impact."
Deputy McGuinness also has long advocated for inclusive and accessible public infrastructure and welcomed the collaborative approach taken to bring this project forward.
