The man was not allowed enter the hostel and was brought to Waterford Garda Station for his own safety.

A man has appeared in Waterford District Court on a public order charge, in relation to an incident that occurred outside McGwire House Hostel on Bath Street in Waterford city.

At approximately 10:30pm on January 24 last, Gardaí arrived to the scene and found Shane Mpofu intoxicated.

He was not allowed enter the hostel and was brought to Waterford Garda Station for his own safety.

He was subsequently charged under the Public Order Act.

His solicitor, Hilary Delahunty, said that the man moved to Ireland from Zimbabwe in 2022.

He is homeless and was staying in McGwire House. 

He has no money or means to pay a fine.

Mpofu, aged 20, is of no fixed abode.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Judge Paula Murphy said that the matter will be struck out if the man doesn’t come to any Garda attention in the next six months.

The case was adjourned until July 21.
